Referral criteria skin cancer

The NKI Center for Early Diagnostics of skin cancer focuses on personalized risk stratification for early diagnosis and follow-up examinations. General practitioners and specialists can refer individuals at high risk of skin cancer to us in case of:
- Skin lesions with melanoma suspicion
- More than 100 common nevi (moles)
- At least 5 clinically atypical nevi
- At least 3 previous melanomas in the medical history
- Family history with three relatives with invasive melanoma, including two first-degree relatives, where the affected individuals must be first- or second-degree relatives
- Family history with two first-degree relatives with invasive melanoma, including one relative with multiple melanomas
Referral to our Center is arranged via Zorgdomein, Antoni van Leeuwenhoek Centrum voor Vroegdiagnostiek.
Some patients may not qualify for skin examination at our Center based on the above criteria, despite being eligible for genetic testing. If the following characteristics are met, we advise referring the patient via Zorgdomein to the clinical geneticist at NKI:
- People with invasive melanoma and a first-degree relative with melanoma, of which at least one was diagnosed <50 years old
- People with invasive melanoma and a first-degree relative with melanoma and a relative with pancreatic carcinoma (on the same side of the family)
- People with invasive melanoma and a first-degree relative with ocular melanoma, mesothelioma, renal cell carcinoma, or BAP1-inactivated melanocytic nevi
- People with melanoma and pancreatic carcinoma
- People with melanoma diagnosed at an exceptionally young age (<18 years old)
Note that if the affected individuals are deceased, their first-degree relatives are also eligible for referral for genetic testing (provided they meet the referral criteria).
