Breast cancer screening clinic

Your medical geneticist or general practitioner has referred you to the screening clinic at the NKI Center for Early Diagnostics because you have an increased risk of developing breast cancer. An increased risk warrants periodic screening so we can catch any potential issues as early as possible.

The screening clinic

The NKI Center for Early Diagnostics has established a special screening clinic for women who are at an increased risk of developing breast cancer due to hereditary factors or familial history.

Hereditary

A hereditary cause means that a DNA test has detected a genetic mutation that significantly increases the risk of breast cancer.

Familial

A familial cause means that a DNA test has not identified a genetic mutation, but breast cancer has occurred in several women in the family, indicating an increased risk of breast cancer.

Increasingly, women are aware at a young age that they have an elevated risk of breast cancer and are eligible for regular screenings. In addition to these screenings, we place great importance on providing thorough information. Through this clinic, we aim to offer support and tailored care to women with an increased risk.

What to expect at the screening clinic

At the screening clinic you will receive information about the implications of your hereditary factors and the screening options available to detect potential breast cancer at an early stage. Besides regular imaging tests (such as mammography or MRI), we will also assess your other risk factors for breast cancer. This allows us to provide comprehensive guidance and minimize your risk as much as possible. For some women, the risk of breast cancer will be high enough to consider preventive surgery. We pay special attention to this at the screening clinic.

You will have a dedicated contact person at the screening clinic.

The Screening Clinic involves several specialists: radiologists, clinical geneticists, surgeons, and nurse specialists.

Current Advice

The clinical geneticist is actively involved in this clinic, enabling us to keep your risk assessment and screening advice up-to-date based on the latest insights.

Genetic screening for breast cancer

Genetic screening provides more information about the risk of developing (or re-developing) breast cancer. An elevated risk warrants breast screenings to detect any breast cancer at an early stage.

If there are indications of a possible hereditary predisposition to breast cancer, you may be referred for genetic testing at the clinical genetics department at the NKI. If you have not been diagnosed with breast cancer yourself, a family member with breast cancer should preferably be referred for genetic testing.

Team
