Our healthcare providers were recently invited again to visit Stichting de Gouden Handen in the Southeastern part of Amsterdam, this time to provide information about breast cancer. Cancer is a difficult topic within certain communities. Stichting Gouden Handen wants to raise awareness about cancer and encourages conversations about cancer among people from various cultural backgrounds. An initiative we wholeheartedly support.
Education
Nurse practitioner Barbara Burgers of the Netherlands Cancer Institute Center for Early Diagnostics provided the attendees with new insights into various aspects of breast cancer. Topics included facts and myths about breast cancer, possible causes, symptoms, and risk factors. She answered attendees’ questions together with nurse practitioner Kathinka van Vliet and engaged in discussions on this important subject.
Juanita Conrad, who received part of her treatment at the Netherlands Cancer Institute, shared her inspiring personal story.
Awareness
By discussing cancer with the community in Amsterdam-Zuidoost, the NKI Center for Early Diagnostics aims to break the taboo surrounding cancer and raise awareness about personal cancer risk factors. And this is important: the earlier we can detect cancer, the greater the chance of survival.
