The NKI Center for Early Diagnostics and the Dutch Barrett’s Registry Foundation (NBRS) are joining forces to establish the Barrett coordination center to further improve care for patients with Barrett’s esophagus.
Updated Barrett guideline
The Dutch guideline for patients with Barrett’s esophagus has been revised as of March 1, 2025, meaning that patients with low-risk Barrett’s esophagus no longer need regular endoscopic screening, as it does not contribute to health and may carry risks and disadvantages.
National Barrett registry
Low-risk Barrett’s patients are registered with the Barrett coordination center for inclusion in a National Barrett Registry, to gain a greater understanding of Barrett’s esophagus. This registry also enables future contact if new insights emerge. This initiative is part of a nationwide project by the Dutch Society of Gastroenterology (NVMDL) in collaboration with ZorgEvaluatie & Gepast Gebruik.
Role of the Barrett coordination center
The Barrett coordination center plays a central role in the coordination of:
- Patient registrations
- Data collection and registration with patient consent
- Support for healthcare providers and patients throughout the Netherlands
